20. Twenty.
Longest active winning streak in the nation, and exactly at the right time!
LSU has swept 4 SEC series (S. Carolina, Kentucky, Mississippi State, and Auburn). Of those 20 wins, the Tigers had to come from behind in, I think, 14 of them.
There are obvious parallels between this baseball team and Les Miles' 2007 football team. No quitters. Huge team morale.
Now, the team that was wonderin' if they'd make the SEC tourney at all, has won the tournament. And is not only going to an NCAA Regional, they're hosting it. And I'm fairly confident we'll find out tomorrow that they'll be in the top eight and be asked to host a Super Regional as well. Holy Phoenix, Batman!
There's a lot to write about. But we will be welcoming our third daughter into the fold at any point now. So, I must be very brief.
What's happened?
Well, lots of intangible stuff - some good luck arriving, some bad luck departing, some young guys maturing, some older guys leading.
Some tangible stuff - a coach figuring out the best pitching rotation, a couple of pitchers finding their groove, and the hitters on the team stepping up to the task at hand.
Blake Dean is the hottest of the hot right now. He hit 7/16 (.438), 2 dingers, and drove in 9 RBIs in the tournament and was named the tourny MVP! His Grand Slam versus Bama and his 2 run homer vs. Ole Miss were dramatic.
A couple of other names: Clark hit some key homers, Mitchell did a bit of hitting and some great baserunning, Gibbs is a really good defensive catcher, Coleman has impressed me the most on the mound, with Anthony Ranaudo a close second. Blake Martin, Clark, Dean and Ryan Schimpf all made the All-Tourny Team.
So - Regional pairings come out tomorrow. Will be interesting to say the least. Next game is Friday in Alex Box. I won't be there in person, but I will be there in spirit!
Geaux Tigers!
